VoxBody Studio believes that rope bondage education--from the start--should be aimed at both the top and the bottom. This is a partnered modality, and each side’s knowledge and learning arc is vital to the overall experience. We believe that power exchange and deep equality can co-exist. We encourage bottoms to ask questions in class, even classes that are highly focused on technique of tying, and we encourage tops to ask questions concerning bottoming education.

Trying to figure out where you fit into the class levels? This guide may help! What best describes your present relationship with rope?

Beginner

(both) I have never tied or been tied and want to learn!

Advanced beginner

(tops) I can tie a single column tie proficiently with my eyes closed.

(bottoms) I know what a column tie should feel like on me, and will speak up when it doesn't feel right.

(both) I am learning about tension, anatomy and communication for rope bondage. Consent matters!

Intermediate

(tops) I can tie single and double column ties proficiently, know how to lock down my rope with half hitches, slip knots, and yuki knots, have learned a few specific ties/patterns, and am practicing my rope management and tension.

(bottoms) I know when a tie or pattern feels right on me, and when it doesn’t, and will speak up accordingly. I am getting to know my body in rope, what I like, and don’t like, what challenges me and what I enjoy, and can advocate for myself accordingly.

(both) I am learning even more about tension, anatomy and communication for rope bondage, reading articles, attending jams, and meetups, and practicing regularly. My negotiation skills are growing.

Advanced

(tops) I feel ready to begin to learn about suspension. I have a very proficient boxtie/chest harness in my tool kit and understand why it is structured the way it is. I have learned a hip harness. I have a good grip on rope management and tension. I practice regularly and know what to look out for in a boxtie that may be troublesome. I check in with my bottoms’ hands for mobility in a boxtie. I will listen to my bottom when they are in my rope and will heed their articulations to any issues. I am humble.

(bottoms) I feel ready to begin to learn about suspension, and understand it is the safety of my body at-risk in suspension and am committed to advocating for myself. I know what my body is like in a boxtie/chest harness. I can name at least one boxtie/chest harness I like to be in, and have experienced boxties that have felt great, as well as some that are off, and can differentiate between the two and why. I am practicing active bottoming.

(both) I am learning even more about tension, anatomy and communication for rope bondage, reading articles, attending jams, and meetups, and practicing regularly. I am hungry for more knowledge and understanding about rope bondage, and eager to keep learning. I understand as my skill level grows, so must my ability to negotiate.

Suspension

(both) I have successfully suspended at least a few times, and understand that learning and education is ongoing and am committed to always being a student.
